With increasing interest in cemetery services from the public, SMCT was welcomed as a valuable addition to the Aged and Disability Expo. The team adopted a gentle, engaging approach focused on education, awareness, and building connections. The booth attracted over 150 visitors from 738 attendees, sparking rich conversations, knowledge exchange, and meaningful insights into community perceptions and needs. The booth itself was highly praised for its visual appeal and thoughtful layout, showcasing SMCT’s evolving identity as more than just a cemetery provider.

Our focus was on conversations about how we are reimagining cemeteries and memorial parks as inclusive, welcoming spaces for everyone. Serving Melbourne’s Southeast, our organisation provides burial, cremation, and memorial services while also caring for the history, culture, and natural beauty of our eleven sites.

Engagement Activities

We hosted 2 activities – a lolly jar guessing game and an interactive reflection board which encouraged engagement and conversation. Our engagement activity was set up to understand community sentiment regarding pre-planning by asking the following questions:

"When I die, I want to be remembered by..." and "What have you planned for you to be remember?"

Some of the responses we received:

When I die, I want to be remembered by…What have you planned for you to be remember
The things I helped with-the wisdom I impartedFriends meeting and sharing stories
Being a kind-hearted people connectorHave had conversations and written things down
She made a differenceI’m paying off my grave with a payment plan early, for peace of mind

Thank You

The SMCT team would like to thank the Aged and Disability expo attendees for being open to hearing about our organisation and our commitment to supporting the community. The team walked away with valuable insights and a deeper connection to the community.
