About MGC

Melbourne General Cemetery is open from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. The Customer Service Centre is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, excluding public holidays.

MGC is accessible by car, or public transport. To get to MGC by public transport, board a tram on the number 1 or 6 lines, and get off at one of the following stops.

  • Princes St/Lygon St
  • Melbourne Cemetery/Lygon St
  • Fenwick St/Lygon St

There is parking available in and around the cemetery.

There is free parking available near the Gatehouse within Melbourne General Cemetery. There is also metered parking available on the surrounding roads. This includes:

  • College Crescent
  • Lygon Street
  • Macpherson Street
  • Princes Park Drive

The tour does not have a guide, however the office at the Gatehouse is staffed Monday-Friday from 9am to 4pm.

The office is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 4pm, excluding public holidays.

About the tour

Before taking the tour

The tour can be accessed online at tours.smct.org.au.

The tour spans 3km, and the audio recording is around 35 minutes.

Please wear suitable walking shoes, and clothes that are weather appropriate.

Make sure you bring a well-charged mobile. We also recommend bringing headphones or earbuds to listen to the tour with.

Please also plan for the weather and consider sun protection or umbrellas.

The tour content includes topics such as death, illness, disability, and judicial practices. It also spans 3km through the cemetery. Please take this into consideration when choosing whether to take the tour with children.

No, this tour is self-guided. However, there are clear directions in the tour, and signs around the cemetery to assist you.

The tour will be accessible between June and July. It will be taken down on Thursday 1 August.

You can visit MGC at any time, during opening hours, to complete the tour.

During the tour

Instructions for the tour begin at the Gatehouse near the entrance off College Crescent.

There are public bathrooms near the Gatehouse, and by the gate at Macpherson Street.

If you're running low on charge, you can always pause the tour and return later when you have charged your phone.

There is minimal shade during the tour. We advise sun protection, such as hats and sunscreen, even if it's not sunny, as UV can reflect off the concrete and stone of monuments.

There is minimal protection from the rain on the tour. Please act according to the weather and listen to any weather warnings.

Payment/Booking

No, as this is a self-guided tour you can take it at any time that suits you within our opening hours (8am to 6pm each day).

This is a free tour, so taking the tour doesn't cost anything. There may be potential parking costs if you need to park on the streets surrounding the cemetery.

Accessibility

Yes! This tour follows the cemetery's paved roads and paths. All the stops can be seen from these roads. However, some of the stops aren't along the roadside and may be less visible. The ground around these monuments may be damp, uneven, or muddy depending on the recent weather. Please choose the best option for you when navigating these areas.

Yes! The written descriptions on the tour are identical to the audio.
