As part of our commitment to the sustainable management of the cemeteries in our care, SMCT regularly undertakes maintenance works of the facilities and gardens.

This is part of our future-proofing of sites: so they can meet the needs of our communities now and for the next generations.

Roof, drainage and minor landscaping works are taking place at the MGC Gatehouse until 17 April 2025.

The area around the Gatehouse will be fenced off along the Royal Park Drive and College Crescent boundaries. Visitors may experience some construction noise but the works will not impact access to the cemetery or services.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you would like to stay up to date on the progress of these works to take place at Melbourne General Cemetery please click the

Frequently Asked Questions

For more information about the upcoming works at Melbourne General Cemetery, please expand the questions below.

Strong weather conditions over time have damaged tiles and caused some leaks in the Gatehouse roof. If this damage is left unrepaired it could result in structural damage. Works include essential repairs to the roof and drainage to ensure the Gatehouse stays in good condition for use now and into the future.

The project and works will be carried out with sensitivity to the building and garden surrounds.

Yes. Works will not impact access to Melbourne General Cemetery, although they will temporarily create a work zone around the Gatehouse.

Yes. If you have an enquiry, our Customer Support team is on site at the Gatehouse to help you during regular working hours.

The public toilets near the Gatehouse will also remain open through the works period.

Some construction noise will be heard at times and we will limit this to suitable operating hours where possible.

Construction fencing will be placed around two sides of the Gatehouse (College Crescent and Royal Park Drive) to provide a secure works zone and ensure the safety of our teams and visitors. Scaffolding may be required around the building as part of the works.

Some roses at the cemetery-facing side of the building and other plants along two sides of the Gatehouse will be removed. This is to provide safe and clear access to areas requiring drainage works. New plants will be installed at the end of the project to bring the gardens back to life.

We will replace like for like in the rose garden. Other native plants and suitable species will be installed along the Royal Park Drive and College Crescent sides of the Gatehouse. This will be in keeping with existing planting schemes already in use around the Prime Ministers Garden (located opposite the gatehouse). The overall impact will be a sustainable garden that enhances the beautiful features we expect from Melbourne General Cemetery.

These are the only works planned for the Gatehouse at this time.

The Gatehouse roof and drainage works are carefully planned to provide minimal disruption to the community. The garden works are based on the best conditions to replant for faster growth.

Many factors impact the timing of repairs of the heritage fences and gates for Melbourne General Cemetery including the need for road closures. Heritage restoration works are slow and a detailed planning schedule is needed to minimise disruption. Another factor for heritage restoration is securing appropriate replacements. This is a complicated process, and we are working with stakeholders and suppliers (there are only two foundries in Australia conducting this work) to fit into their work streams.
