The project has benefited the cemetery in many ways, including:

  • 30% decrease in herbicide use across the site
  • 3°C decrease in air temperature around mulched areas
  • Improved the soil quality and reduced erosion, runoff and water pooling
  • Visible increases in biodiversity, including increased activity from beneficial native insects, worms, fungi and birds.

As we move into the next phase of planting for this project, we want our community to get involved!

With Planet Ark, we are hosting a planting day on the 12th October for the community and we would love your help. Join us at Melbourne General Cemetery for a 'Grassroots' community planting day, where we will introduce some native wildflower seedlings to our established Project Cultivate grasslands. While our grasses are great, we need your help to introduce more flowering colour. Young or old, green thumb or brown, head down to the cemetery, explore our grasslands and help us add some indigenous wildflowers to this iconic space!
