Caring for the future of Melbourne General Cemetery

SMCT is committed to maintaining our cemeteries sustainably to meet community needs now and into the future. Melbourne General Cemetery is home to 170 years of our shared history. We regularly undertake maintenance works for the facilities and gardens to preserve this history for generations to come.

Upcoming Works

Our teams are restoring a section of the Lygon Street Fence to repair damage caused by debris and the natural slope of Melbourne General Cemetery.

Two trees near the East Gate on Lygon Street will be removed to ensure our teams can safely carry out works.

We understand that trees are an important and valued part of the cemetery. This decision has been made carefully with preserving heritage, the safety and long-term care of Melbourne General Cemetery in mind.

Trees will be removed in early February 2026, and we expect minimal impact for visitors using this gate.

Thank you for your understanding as we undertake these essential works to preserve and protect the cemetery’s heritage.

On Friday 7 November, the front exit gate on College Crescent will be closed for the day while we prepare the gate for restoration.

  • Vehicles leaving the cemetery must use the Macpherson Street gate. This gate will be exit-only, with a 'No Entry' sign in place.
  • Final restoration works will take place over three weeks in 2026.

Thank you for your understanding as we continue works to preserve and maintain Melbourne General Cemetery.

We’re restoring a section of the heritage fence along Princess Park Drive, which was damaged during a storm.

From 12 August 2025, essential maintenance works will take place along a section of Princess Park Drive. The fence is part of the cemetery’s heritage and needs to be carefully restored using specialised materials and techniques. Only a small number of businesses in Australia can carry out this kind of cast iron metal work, which is why the process will take up to nine months.

Community members will still be able to visit loved ones in the area, but please be aware that there may be construction noises at certain times. Funeral services will continue as planned, and maintenance works will pause during nearby services to minimise disruption.

We understand this may be inconvenient for now, but these fence works are essential to improve the space, keep it safe and preserve the history and heritage of the site.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. If you have any concerns during these works, please do not hesitate to contact our Customer Support team on 1300 466 904 or email mgc@smct.org.au.
